Show that an=n21 converges to 0 from the ε-N definition, and find N for ε=0.01.
N(ε)=⌈ε1⌉
an=1/n2, ε=0.01 — the tail enters the band from N=10.
Show proof
- Since n21−0=n21, the inequality n21<ε is equivalent to n2>ε1, i.e. n>ε1.
- Put N=⌈ε1⌉. If n>N then n>ε1, so ∣an−0∣<ε. Hence an→0 by the ε-N definition.
- For ε=0.01, 0.011=10, so N=10. Indeed, for n≥11 we have n21≤1211<0.01.
